What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care—also known as DPC—is a straightforward alternative to insurance-based medicine. Instead of billing an insurance company for every visit, you pay a flat monthly membership fee directly to your physician which includes your appointment fees. That's it.

No copays. No surprise bills. No long waits for short appointments. Just a real doctor who knows you, available to you, working for you.

It's not a new idea, it's actually the oldest idea in medicine. A doctor and a patient, in a relationship built on trust. Well Woven is what happens when that model meets modern, evidence-based primary care.

What Is Primary Care?

Primary care is the care you get from your main doctor. It includes sick visits, annual physical exams, preventative healthcare, medication refills, procedures like wart freezing and pap smears, and referrals to specialists when needed. Your primary care physician is your go-to. The person who holds the whole picture of your health with you.

What is an osteopathic physician (D.O.)?

Dr. Lok is an osteopathic physician. Osteopathic physicians do everything a medical doctor (M.D.) can do — prescribe medications, advise on health, refer to specialists, perform procedures — However, the D.O. has unique philosophies that aligns with holistic medicine: the body is a whole and has an innate capacity to self-heal.

What is Dr. Lok's approach to health?

Dr. Lok practices conventional medicine with an integrative lens. For something like high blood pressure, she might initiate or refill medications while also discussing supplements, herbs, and lifestyle changes — and coordinating with alternative health specialists like acupuncturists if that's part of your picture.

A note on scope: Dr. Lok is not a functional or naturopathic physician. She does not diagnose or treat Chronic Lyme, Chronic Mold syndromes, and she does not interpret Dutch hormone tests. To holistically treat conditions such as POTS and EDS, appropriate referrals may be made if appropriate.

Questions About Getting Started At Well Woven

How do I become a patient?

It starts with a free Meet & Greet: a 30-minute virtual visit with Dr. Lok. No commitment, no pressure. If it feels like a good fit for both of you, your first appointment gets scheduled from there. Here's the full process:

  • Schedule your complimentary Meet & Greet

  • If both parties agree it's a good fit, your first appointment is scheduled

  • You'll receive instructions to activate your patient portal and complete intake forms before your first visit

  • Your first appointment is completed — payment is collected at the end via debit, credit, or check (for yearly memberships)

Can I join if I already have a primary care doctor?

Yes. Many Well Woven members transition from an existing primary care relationship. The Meet & Greet is a good place to talk through how that transition might work for you.

Is there a minimum commitment, and can I sign up for just a couple of months?

Becoming a Well Woven member means establishing with Dr. Lok as your primary care physician — an ongoing professional relationship designed to last years, not months. All memberships require a 6-month minimum commitment. That said, you can still pay monthly — no need to pay everything upfront. If circumstances change or you need to cancel for financial reasons, just let Dr. Lok know and she may be able to work with you.

Insurance & Billing Questions

Can I keep my health insurance?

Absolutely. You'll likely want to keep your health insurance or health share plan for things Dr. Lok orders, such as medications, labs, and imaging. Well Woven covers your primary care. Insurance or a health share plan covers the rest.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Many members use their HSA or FSA to cover their Well Woven membership. While we can't give legal or tax advice, DPC memberships are commonly considered eligible medical expenses per the “Big Beautiful Bill”. Check with your plan provider or a tax professional to confirm for your specific situation.

How does billing work?

Monthly membership billing begins on your first appointment and is charged to your card on the same day each month. For yearly memberships, confirmation of renewal will be requested before the next year's billing. To cancel, notify Dr. Lok at least 72 hours before your next billing cycle.

Do I need insurance to join?

No. Well Woven does not require insurance, and membership is not billed to insurance. Many members have no insurance at all, or utilize a catastrophic plan, medicaid/medicare, or health shares.

What if I can't afford the membership?

Dr. Lok believes cost should never be the reason someone goes without care. Trade for membership is considered on a case-by-case basis; ask about the clinic wishlist at your Meet & Greet. Well Woven is also exploring a membership sponsorship program for those who might not otherwise have access.

Are there any contracts?

There is a 6 month minimum required for membership. That said, you can still pay monthly — no need to pay everything upfront.

Appointments & Access

Is Well Woven an urgent care clinic?

No. Well Woven is a primary care practice, not an urgent care clinic. Same or next-day appointments are not guaranteed. For emergencies, always go to the emergency department.

Is telehealth available?

Yes. Both in-person and virtual appointments are available Monday through Friday, 9am–4pm.

How long are appointments?

30–60 minutes. Dr. Lok sees a limited number of patients by design so she has the time to actually listen, think, and care for you properly.

How often will I see Dr. Lok?

It depends on your needs. Some new patients visit every 3–4 weeks during the first couple months while Dr. Lok gets to know their full health picture. After that, frequency ranges from monthly to once a year, whatever makes sense for you.

What if I need care while Dr. Lok is on vacation?

Dr. Lok attempts to give all members advance notice before any time away, along with contact information for a covering physician when able — typically a local doctor she knows personally and trusts with her patients' care.

How do I reach Dr. Lok between appointments?

Members can contact Dr. Lok directly via text, call, email, or the secure patient portal during clinic hours. Outside of those hours Dr. Lok is resting and will get back to you within 72 hours. If it's a true emergency, go to the emergency department.

Labs, Imaging & Procedures

What if I need bloodwork or imaging?

Dr. Lok can order labs and imaging just like any other primary care physician. They'll be billed to your insurance if you have it. If you don't, she works with third-party laboratories and local imaging centers to get you discounted rates. Well Woven's phlebotomist, Amber, is in the clinic every Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. If you need labs sooner, Dr. Lok will direct you to LabCorp or Quest in Asheville or a lab near you.

What instant labs are available in the clinic?

Point-of-care testing includes urine dipstick for UTIs, urine pregnancy tests, strep, mono, RSV, COVID, flu, and A1c diabetes testing: results while you're still in the office.

What procedures does Dr. Lok perform in the clinic?

Quite a few. Pap smears, wart and skin tag freezing, knee and keloid injections, skin biopsies, stitches, abscess drainage, EKGs, IUD removals, ear wax lavage, body composition analysis, and Nexplanon insertions on a case-by-case basis.

About Dr. Lok & The Practice

Is Well Woven LGBTQ+ affirming?

Absolutely. Dr. Lok goes beyond queer-tolerant to queer-affirming. Care includes gender-affirming treatment (hormones and referrals), PrEP, stirrup-free and trauma-informed pap smears, HIV and sexual health appointments, STI testing and treatment, and reproductive health that respects your values. Conversations about health, identity, sexuality, consent, and the whole picture of who you are are welcome here.

Does Dr. Lok see children and older adults?

Yes to both. Dr. Lok enjoys caring for older adults — including end-of-life and palliative care — and sees children and adolescents as well. Membership for children under 18 are $75/month.

I've had doctors leave before. Will Dr. Lok do the same?

Completely understandable concern. Dr. Lok started Well Woven specifically to build long-term patient care relationships. Family medicine has a rich tradition of lifelong care, and that's exactly what she's here for. While no one can promise the future, she genuinely loves her work and has no intention of leaving. She'd be honored to be your doctor for the rest of your life.

Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Parking is directly in front of the clinic with a handicapped spot at the entrance. Doors are standard width (3 feet) and the restroom has handicap rails. Dr. Lok can also perform osteopathic manual therapy in a wheelchair and sees patients with mobility limitations regularly. Home visits are available to members within driving distance for an additional fee.

Can I bring my service or emotional support animal?

Yes. Dr. Lok will do her best to hold back the strong urge to pet them.
